Message from Dr. Tetsuo Shu, the president of  Asian Pacific Academy of            Cosmetic  Surgery  

Dear Korean Colleagues,

As the President of Asian Pacific Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, it is my honor and pleasure to represent our Academy to congratulate the foundation of Korean Society of Aesthetic Surgery. 

As far as I know that the history of Aesthetic Surgery has been practiced for decades in Korea by surgeons from various field of medicine.

But the establishment of a society goes a long way after elimination of many obstacles and overcoming from the prejudice. I have a confidence that this newly established Korean Society of Cosmetic Surgery will become a strong group in the near future under the enthusiasm of contribution in this field and making every endeavor by your members.

The history of our Asian Pacific Academy of Cosmetic  Surgery has to go back to 1992, we have started as the name of  Asian Academy of Cosmetic  Surgery under the umbrella of The Northern American Academy of Cosmetic and Restorative Surgery ( NAACRS ) .  We had held two international Conferences and Symposium on Cosmetic Surgery in Manila, Philippines under the support of NAACRS in November 1994 and February 1997.   In 1998, I myself was elected as the member of Board of Directors, International Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. I felt strongly that Asia should have its own Organization of Cosmetic Surgery to strengthen the oriental features, but not always depend on the Western countries and different culture.  I had sat at round table with NAACRS board members had agreed our independence from America.

The new Asian Academy of Cosmetic  Surgery was started in October 1998 and the first President was Dr. Corazon Collantes-Jose, and we had organized our first World Congress of Cosmetic Surgery with live surgical demonstrations successfully in Manila,Philippines on February 25-27, 2000.  After this meeting, I, Dr. Tetsuo Shu, was elected as the Second President of the Academy, and many countries in the Pacific Rim included Australia and Hawaii had expressed their willingness of joining this academy, therefore, our Board Member of Directors had decided to change the Academy's name from  Asian Academy of Cosmetic  Surgery to  Asian Pacific Academy of Cosmetic  Surgery to involve all the countries in Pacific Rim.

We had held our Second World Congress of Cosmetic Surgery with Live Surgical Demonstrations successfully in Sydney, Australia in October 2001.

Our coming Third World Congress of Cosmetic Surgery with Live Surgical Demonstrations will be held on October 26-29, 2002 in Shanghai, as the sponsor and the organizer of the meeting,  I would like to invite all of your Korean colleagues to participate this important World Meeting, hundreds of plastic, cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists from 47 countries will attend this biggest world meeting.

I am anticipating that Korean Society of Cosmetic Surgery will involve in our  Asian Pacific Academy of Cosmetic  Surgery, and we are welcoming your colleagues to become our members, through this significant mutual relationship between our two groups, I am sure that we will become more powerful, and more stronger organization in the future.  I also hope that your members will contribute greatly in the field of Cosmetic Surgery in Asia.

Fortunately, it is my honor that I had been elected as the next President of International Academy of Cosmetic Surgery in the Presidential Board Meeting that was held in Berlin, Germany in May 2001.  And I will take over the Presidency of International Academy of Cosmetic Surgery on September 1, 2002.

The International Academy of Cosmetic Surgery was founded in 1953 in Italy by Dr. Giorgio Fischer and his father.  It will be the first time that this traditional Academy's Administration Offices will move to Asia from American and European countries.  For

this reason, I am expecting that all of your members and colleagues could support this International Academy of Cosmetic Surgery , and let us contribute and make it stronger by our Asian hands.  Your cooperation will be highly appreciated.

I am looking forward to meeting you in Shanghai World Congress of Cosmetic Surgery with Live Surgical Demonstrations.  And mostly, I expect that the next Fourth World Congress of Cosmetic Surgery with Live Surgical Demonstrations could be held in Seoul, Korea in 2003.
